What is Baja

The Baja SAE car is a long-suspension travel, one-manned off road endurance vehicle. Our cars weigh approximately 330 to 360 pounds and can reach 35 mph with only a 10hp Briggs and Stratton engine. We design our cars with the best power-to-weight ratio we can without inhibiting performance or safety.

Senior students head the design of crucial aspects of the car for Senior Design Projects while various underclassmen head the rest of the car’s design or redesign. All year long freshmen all the way up to the seniors work side-by-side aiding in the design, manufacturing process, building, and testing the car in anticipation for our competition.

The Baja SAE competitions, since there are to many to go to is in May/June every year. Our team competes against some of the top engineering schools in the nation in events such as rock crawl, hill climb, acceleration, and maneuverability. Other aspects of the competition include design, sales, cost, and a four hour endurance race. In the last 7 years, we have placed top ten with 6 of 7 cars. We are proud of the achievements over the years in representing SDSM&T and CAMP.
